My eyes open. There is only darkness. I can’t see anything and I don’t feel my body. I don’t know up from down or left from right. I feel like rubbing my eyes but I don’t seem to have eyes or hands.
“Where am I?” I ask into nothingness.
“You are right here. Where else would you be?” the nothingness which sounds a lot like my voice responds.
“Where is here?”
“Here is where it always is.”
“No, I mean like where am I in space?”
“What space?”
“Well, the space in which everything is. You know, like, where humans are and animals and things and stuff.”
“Oh. You’re not there.”
“What do you mean I’m not there? Then where am I?”
“You are here.”
“Stop playing with me! What is this place? Who are you?”
“This is no place. I am you.”
“What do you mean?”
“Exactly what I said.”
“Okay, okay. Very funny. You got me. Let’s stop playing this game, okay? How can I leave this place?”
“Where do you want to go?”
“Back to my life. Back to my reality.”
“Where is that supposed to be?”
“….That’s strange. I don’t really remember. I just want to go home.”
“But you are home.”
“What do you mean? There is nothing here. I can’t see anything. I don’t even feel my body.”
“Exactly.”
“Please, can’t you just give me one straight answer?”
“I will try my best.”
“Ok then, how did I get here?”
“You didn’t. You were always here.”
“But why don’t I remember anything?”
“That’s how it always is.”
“That’s how what always is?”
“We go on an adventure and then forget we’ve been on an adventure.”
“What kind of adventure?”
“Any adventure we can imagine.”
“Why suddenly we?”
“So you don’t get the idea that you are different from me.”
“I am not?”
“Nope.”
“Who am I?”
“You are me.”
“What am I doing here?”
“Apparently asking pointless questions.”
“What else can I do?”
“Anything you like.”
“Aha! Now it’s just me again, huh?”
“Whatever gets your boat floating.”
“…I can do whatever I want?”
“Sure.”
“Then I want to leave this place.”
“There is nowhere to go and this is no place.”
“But how can I go on adventures if I can’t leave?”
“The way you always do it — imagination.”
“Are you serious?”
“Dead serious.”
“Wow. This is kind of silly but ok. So I can imagine leaving this place?”
“Sure, anything you like, boss.”
“Are you being condescending?”
“Who? Me? Never!”
“Now you’re being sarcastic, huh?”
“Just trying to lighten the mood.”
“Yeah, okay, I’m not really in a mood to be honest. I would just like to go back to the real world.”
“There is no real world.”
“Then what IS real?”
“Only this.”
“Oh my god…anyway, I’m imagining a door now and I’ll be on my way.”
“Cool, have fun.”
A door appears in the nothingness.
“Wow! It really works!”
“Of course.”
“Okay, bye then. Nice having had a chat with you. Hopefully, we don’t need to do this again.”
“I’m sure we will, but yeah see you sooner than you think. Bye.”
Whatever it is I am, leaves through the door.
Sometime later.
My eyes open. There is only darkness. I can’t see anything and I don’t feel my body…
