Beliefs Shape Our Reality
Belief systems shape our life and reality. This is true for every aspect of our life, including the aspect of money.
Let’s be honest here, we all want to be wealthy and have a lot of money to be financially free and independent. At least that’s what I want. But many of us never get to the point where we feel like we are in true abundance.
One of the main reasons for that is that we have adopted limiting beliefs about money.
Most of these are beliefs we unconsciously accepted from our environment. Be it our parents, teachers, friends, media, and society in general. You might think that you don’t have any of those limiting beliefs about money and still aren’t wealthy or receiving the money you want.
But do not be mistaken.
Most of our beliefs are operating deep in our subconscious and as soon as we accept a belief it is part of our reality.
For me, it was tricky to uncover all the limiting beliefs about money I held. And some might still be operating to some extent because uprooting your beliefs is a process. Often you cannot change a belief that has been part of your worldview for your whole life in just a day. It might take time.
Nonetheless, beliefs can be changed. The beliefs about money, we have are not some golden unchangeable rules.
Beliefs are just that, beliefs. They do not represent objective reality.
Why not at least adopt beliefs that are positive, affirmative, and supportive?
So, the first step is to accept that you have limiting beliefs about money. Then, the second step is to become aware of your limiting beliefs.
Start by asking yourself, what money is and means to you.
1. Money is The Root of All Evil
This is a classic limiting belief about money.
We see money as something bad and evil.
Some of us even seem to have disgust towards money. We associate it with greedy ego-centered businessmen. Moreover, there is even the widespread term of “stinking rich”, which implies that when you are rich you stink, and we certainly don’t want that.
And this is where the problems begin.
Most of us see ourselves as good. So, now if we believe we are good, and money is bad we create conflict inside of us.
Our good self doesn’t want to be bad and that’s how we keep wealth out of our life.
Money is as good as we make it to be.
And if we believe we are good, why not believe that money will make us an even better person?
We must let go of the limiting belief that money is something evil that will turn us into something evil as well.
Instead, replace it with:
“Money is a resource that does good in my life and for others.”
“Money is good.”
2. Money is a Limited Resource
Many of us believe that there is not enough money for everyone and only a handful of people receive an abundance of money. And you are not one of them.
We have to let this scarcity mindset go and replace it with an abundance mindset.
According to various sources, there is approximately $37 trillion in circulation and this number is not shrinking.
Check out this interesting infographic on all of the world’s money and markets.
Therefore, it is safe to say that there is not only enough but MORE than enough for everyone.
Replace the belief that money is a limited resource with:
“There is more than enough money to create abundance for everyone.”
3. Money is Not That Important
This is a statement I used to say a lot. In many cases, as in my case, I think, it’s just a way to make ourselves feel better.
As if to say, “If I wanted to, I could have more money but it’s just not important to me.”
However, by adopting this belief you are not only giving away your responsibility but also denying money the respect and attention, it deserves.
This doesn’t mean that money should be your only concern, but by making it a priority, money will make you a priority too.
Replace the belief that money is not important with:
“I love money and money loves me.”
“Money is one of my priorities in life.”
4. I Have to Work Hard to Get Money
For some reason, most of us have accepted the limiting belief that to get a lot of money we have to work hard.
Society tells us that the only way to achieve what you want is by working hard and harder than anyone else.
First of all, it’s more important to do the right things and work smart to get wealthy. But I want to go even further, and this might be controversial for many.
Why not let go of the belief that we must work to get money?
I know this sounds unrealistic but hear me out.
There is no fundamental universal law that says that you have to work to get money.
However, this doesn’t mean that you should just sit around and do nothing. It means that you can replace the word work with play. You can do what you love and by following your heart money will come your way.
The belief that we must work to get money is so deeply ingrained that we forget that we as humans have created this belief.
Trust, that if you walk your heart’s way, money will flow to you because you are creating value for the world in accordance with your interests and best abilities.
Replace the belief that you have to work hard for money with:
“I am in the flow of money and money flows to me effortlessly.”
“By following my heart, I provide value for the world and get wealthy while doing so.”
5. The Rich Get Richer and The Poor Get Poorer
This is another one of the limiting beliefs about money where we give away our responsibility for our financial situation.
It’s easy to assume that the only people who accumulate wealth are the ones who are already wealthy. However, there are plenty of examples out there where people went from rags to riches and why shouldn’t you be one of those?
We must let go of the limiting belief that money flows only to the rich.
Replace it with:
“I am responsible for my financial situation.”
“I am worthy of money.”
“Everything I need to live in abundance is inside me.”
6. I Have to Save a Lot to Have a Lot of Money
Everyone seems to tell us that we have to save a lot of money and invest it in a safe fund so that in 30 years we will finally achieve financial freedom.
The thing is most of us don’t want to live in abundance when we are 70 or 80 years old but when we are young and have plenty of time to enjoy this financial freedom.
Moreover, most wealthy people didn’t become rich by only investing in a fund with a 3% increase in value p.a.
If anything, they took risks, were persistent, and created value for the world.
Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with saving money and I’m not saying you should mindlessly spend all your money on useless superficial things. Saving and investing your money is without a doubt helpful!
But this is a fine edge.
If you regularly deny yourselves experiences you want to make and things you want to have because you want to save money, you are playing into a scarcity mindset.
You are telling the universe that you cannot live the life you want to live because you don’t have the money.
So, do safe money but let go of the belief that the only way to get a lot of money is by saving a lot of money.
Replace it with:
“Money flows to me regardless of the circumstances.”
“Money flows to me not only through saving a lot.”
7. Money Can’t Buy Happiness
This is another classic limiting belief about money everyone of us has probably heard.
While it may be true that money shouldn’t be your main source of happiness, the belief that money can’t buy happiness can certainly be a limiting one.
Especially in spirituality and religion, money and wealth are often considered unimportant and frequently even frowned upon. Many spiritual figures and masters forego wealth and worldly possessions to live a simple life.
But to be spiritual or religious you don’t have to live in poverty.
Sure, money technically can’t buy the feeling of happiness, but money can enable us to live the life we want to live. Money can create opportunities and choices to live freely and independently. Moreover, money also enables us to do more good for others, the community we live in, and the world.
Therefore, spirituality and money can work hand in hand.
Replace the belief that money can’t buy happiness with:
“Money enables me to live the life I want to live.”
“Money enables me to do good for myself and others.”
